On one of my increasingly frequent trips to the mainland, I came across a woman who was to help me, encourage me, and offer me a space to be Julie. Helen was one of Anne’s best friends and had known for some years about my gender issues. She seemed to understand me and she made me feel comfortable because she totally accepted me as Julie. She allowed me to use her house as a base to go on my city trips, something I hadn’t been able to do since moving to the Isle of Coll. We would also have girly nights in with a bottle of wine, watching a movie on TV. So at the time it really did seem like I could have the best of both worlds. That said, when I was with Helen there was always a nagging feeling that I had to get back to Coll, and when I got back there everyone just assumed that I had been away on business or something like that.

Anne, out of loyalty – although that was beginning to wane – kept up that story too, as the alternative would probably have finished us, along with everything we had worked so hard for. We weren’t quite at that point yet, though things between us were inevitably becoming more strained and uneasy.
